PENNY: I promised Nik in his last days that I would mix the album “Now and Ever Shall Be” The music is like a film soundtrack, orchestral journeys blended with his progressive rock tendencies. He left a list and his mix notes which I hope to decipher in the coming days, weeks, months, whatever it takes.
I made several new “rough” mixes of the piece “Tarantella: Tarantula on a Wedding Cake” which is a piece for modern ballet. I think this track should be a part of many prominent dance companies’standard repertoire. Influences include Steve Reich, Carl Stalling, Frank Zappa, Igor Stravinsky, the Beatles, King Crimson and of course Nik! Here is a link on SoundCloud Tarantella: Tarantula on a Wedding Cake
I am seeking serious dancers to collaborate with me to create workshop performances , similar to the dance presented in Nik’s honor at his Memorial on June 7, 2016, featuring Leila Drake and Thomas Fant of State Street Ballet and an ensemble cast of Summer Solstice dancers. This is a structured, partially improvisational piece, with a bride and groom dancing a love duet, ballroom wedding reception dancers (the invited guests), the tarantulas (the uninvited guests) who playfully disrupt and put back together the party.
NIK: (August 2015) Tarantula on a Wedding Cake is a track on my new album, which I’m currently working on.The piece was originally written as an audio visualization or sound track to accompany a part my life in early 2010. The imagery of a tarantula on a wedding cake was inspired by a book I was reading at the time that had nothing to do with weddings or tarantulas. I hope to share the entire album with you in the future; this is only a preview. Penny spent the last month twisting my arm to finish this piece, and finally we did a rough mix together.
